Choosing a trigger

When is USB removal a useful privacy trigger?

Short answer

It suits people who use one designated USB device as a physical trigger: take it when leaving to run the selected protection. It does not encrypt files on that USB device, and removing an arbitrary USB device does not trigger protection.

Bind a device to a routine

Choose a stable USB device that is not frequently used for file transfer. Taking it whenever you leave creates a clear physical habit and can be easier than remembering to click a button.

Loose connections, power issues, and hubs may also look like removal. Avoid binding disruptive actions directly to USB removal during important work, and periodically confirm that the designated device is still recognized.

  • Use a dedicated, stable device
  • Do not remove it while data is being written
  • Start with a low-impact action such as Windows lock
