Troubleshooting and safety
What should I do if I forget the vault password?
Short answer
Stop repeated guesses and any operation that could overwrite the original vault. Locate the recovery material saved during creation and follow the recovery flow. Decryption should not be promised without the password or valid recovery material.
Preserve the original before recovery
Confirm that the vault file has not been moved to unreliable storage, and do not create a same-named file over it. Check separately stored recovery material, password-manager entries, and backup records.
When contacting support, provide only requested error codes and non-sensitive environment information. Do not send the password, recovery key, names of files inside the vault, or file contents. Keep an original copy before attempting recovery.
- Do not overwrite or delete the original vault
- Find separately stored recovery material
- Keep the original and an independent backup
- Never send passwords or recovery keys to anyone
